<p>Technology is advancing at such a pace, it’s not just a matter of employees and organizations reskilling for the AI age. It’s an almost continuous learning process. Sevak talks about the “half-life of a skill” and how it is rapidly decreasing. He says that a skill learnt now is worth half the value of one learnt six years ago.</p>

<p>“I think leaders should be prioritizing adaptability to new external realities,” Sevak says. “The marketplaces are shifting faster and there are more geopolitical questions being raised. What&#8217;s the role of China? What are the regulations coming out of Europe? What are the different governmental changes that are happening in key markets? There are the technology changes, political changes, and certainly all of the shifts in the skilling and human capital side are such that having that adaptive spirit – not being so fixed or having a fixed mindset, but more of a growth mindset, or an adaptive mindset – is going to be particularly critical this year.”</p>

<p>Keep adapting and looking forward is also the advice of <b>David Steinbach</b>, CIO at the global retail investment management company Hines.</p>

<p>“Good decision-making is top of the list. I think it&#8217;s going to be easy to fall back into some old habits and to forget some of the lessons that we&#8217;ve all learned. It&#8217;s going to be easy to fall into recency bias. And I think that that&#8217;s probably the single biggest thing that investors need to be thinking about this year is not to fall prey to those.”</p>

									<p>The research of Prof Carol Dweck (Stanford University) has demonstrated that a growth mindset is essential to a person’s learning and development. </p>
<p>In this article we explore how growth mindset interventions can accelerate and deepen upskilling programs in a future of work context.</p>
<p>In the past, the choice to upskill was one that people made as a normal part of their career path. One was not forced to change, but rather one elected to change. This process of self-selection ensured that most workers seeking a career change or wanting to upskill were prepared for the uncertainty and challenge ahead of them. Now, workers are being forced to change and this has created an entirely new type of challenge. <p>Recent research by Prof Carol Dweck and her teams demonstrated that growth mindset leaders had more engaged teams and that a growth mindset culture lead to greater levels of innovation and integrity.</p>
<p>In fact, growth mindset leaders were more likely to believe in their team&#8217;s potential and believe that every member had the potential to perform better.  Leaders with a fixed mindset were more likely to believe that only some team members had potential and were less likely to develop their team.</p>
<p>In a recent study with a client in Australia we assessed the mindset of 600 managers. Overwhelmingly, growth mindset leaders had higher team engagement scores than fixed mindset leaders.</p>
<p>The research also indicated that fixed mindset leaders were less likely to recognise improved performance from those team members they labelled as being untalented. Once they labelled a team member they were unable to update their assessment regardless of future performance. How demotivating is that for the hard working team member that puts in the effort to improve?</p>
<p>Mindsets matter when it comes to team performance. Fortunately, you can change your mindset with effort and good strategies over time.</p>
